Events and key dates
Dates that belong to a person, not to a calendar grid.

Short answer
A key date is an anniversary that recurs every year — a birthday, a wedding, the day someone died — recorded on the contact it belongs to. Key dates that are approaching appear in TreeLinker's upcoming events, so you see them without going to look. Events are things that happened once, with a date and the people who were there.
Attached to the person
Because the date sits on the contact, opening that person shows it next to the relationship, the timeline and whatever memories you have of them.
Surfaced as they approach
Upcoming key dates are collected into their own section, so the next few weeks are visible at a glance.
